A Sporty Chic in heat…

Sporty Chic – Day 3

The title of this post doesn’t refer to me being “in heat” like our dog used get in when I was a kid – wandering around the house growling with her teeth clamped down on a old chew toy and her butt up in the air – those days are over for me now that I’m married.  I’m referring to actual heat, like it was 97 degrees on Saturday.

My son, Buck, was performing with his Taiko drumming class at a Japanese festival and it was taking place at a sun-scorched park at noon on a completely breezeless day.

What to wear?  It was only day one of my brand new, untested look and I honestly didn’t know how the clothes would hold up.

So I chose an Athleta dress, Capri pants and flats and was so, so, so happy all day.  How can I describe it?  I felt sporty, yet chic.  Wait a second — I felt sporty chic!

I know I feel this way at the beginning of every month – I’m in a brand new clothing relationship and everything is so exciting and new that I can’t help but feel like this style is the one for me.  And then half way through the month the style does something unforgivable (like make look really ugly) and I just can’t wait to break up with it at the end of the month.

But with Sporty chic – I’m just really feeling it.  After the Taiko performance, I picked up two more kids for a play date, but then on the way home I realized, we have no food at home.  So I had to go grocery shopping with five children – and two of those children I couldn’t yell at because they weren’t mine.  The grocery store experience was chaos with kids jumping in and out of the little car attached to the front of grocery cart and running around like maniacs grabbing ice cream samples.  People were staring and we even broke a huge jug of apple juice at check out with a zillion people impatiently waiting in line behind us.

But I was okay with it all because I liked what I was wearing.  I know that sounds crazy, but when you’re drowning in a situation like that, you must grab onto any piece of driftwood sanity that floats by…

And that piece of driftwood was my Athleta dress…

Sporty_Chic_Pattern I would just look at the cute little pattern and go to my happy place… that Athleta place where I’m on paddleboard in Maui, dolphins are swimming nearby and a pina colada awaits me onshore…

Hello, I found this blog via Youlookfab.com – and just thought I’d comment, I’m enjoying the project and the humour! Sporty chic seems like a good style for active moms. Let’s see what you think about it after a month!
Do you have a list of all the styles you’re going to try?
Ps. Your son is adorable! Japanese chic ;)

Thank you so much! Yes, I loved Buck’s Taiko outfit — so cool! On my home page I have a button that says, “The Looks” and it has all the styles I’ve tried so far. The styles for the rest of the year I try to keep secret — partly because sometimes I don’t know what style it’s going to be until the last minute and partly for fun…

Saw your comment about being on a paddleboard in Maui as your happy place. I live near the Noeth Shore of Oahu & recently started Stand Up Paddleboading. I can tell you from experience, it anything but relaxing! It is a TOTAL body workout & when you finish, you’re drenched in sweat…luckily the water is close by so you can cool off! :)

Really? I had no idea paddleboarding was so hard. It looks almost relaxing. What a great work out. I wish I could try it!

  • Denise says:

    okay, love this!

I am not sold on the jeans…

  • rebecca says:

Well, we saw your legs the other day and they looked great. Seriously. Also…that dress is not particularly short. I say shuck the capris and go for it!

if you do go to the gym, i highly recommend trainer Nadine at Coaches Corner.

    • My Year of Fabulous says:

That’s funny — someone just told me how great Nadine is. I go to Langermans which I’ve discovered is basically a gym for the elderly.

      • Tao of Tina says:

heh. never even heard of Langermans. I will say that after working with her three times a week for two months my body has seen a great reduction of F.C.C.T. However, I have been using free weights and the weight machines because the bouncy exercises I loathe and they might be good for one’s heart but folks can’t see my heart as much as they can see my biceps and gluts.

So, weird question- but why the dress + capris combo? I noticed it last month too. Just a personal quirk or is there a modesty related reason? I’m just curious…
