Are you a mom style icon?

Day 29 – A Month of Maxi Dresses…

Recently, my blog friend, Lesia, sent me a great book called, “My Mom, Style Icon” by Piper Weiss.  When Piper was in her twenties, she happened to be looking through her mom’s closet to borrow a purse for a wedding she had to attend, but instead discovered her mom’s secret fashion treasures.  Sarongs, panama hats, belts from trips to Paris – each item was like a clue in the mystery of her mother’s life before she became “just a mom”.  In going through her mom’s closet, Piper was able to finally understand her mom completely and grew much closer to her because of it.   This impressed me because it really shows that clothes are not just for looking hot or trendy, but something much deeper.  Clothes are not only the embodiment of who we are now, but the reminder of who we once were.

The book is a compilation of various moms and their unique styles.

This is my favorite outfit from the book.  This momma is so chic and timeless…

Love the belted bikini on this mom…

This mom modeled for a leather company.  At least that’s what she told her children…

I only wish I had a wedding picture like this…

July_Dress_Mom_DThis costume took a lot of late nights at the sewing machine… drinking Coors for inspiration I’m guessing…

I often wonder what my kids will think of my style quest when they grow up.  Will they talk of it fondly, think of it in wincing horror or have no recollection of it at all and place it in the “repressed memory” section of their brain to be unearthed some day in therapy?

I know that some of the outfits my mom wore when I was a kid (tube tops, hoop earrings, knee high boots) are burned into my brain forever, so I’m guessing some of the outfits I’ve trotted out this year will leave a lasting impression on my kids.

Which is kind of nice, I think.  Because who I am now will someday be who I once was.  And it’s good to have some witnesses…
