Gamine – Day 24
And the winner of the maxi dress quiz?
Sniffmommy! Congratulations! You successfully answered the question, What is a Birkin Bag? Who designed it? Who inspired it?
And for those of you who don’t know the answer to this question, let me (well, actually Google) help enlighten you — The Birkin Bag was named after actress and singer Jane Birkin and it was designed by Hermes. Here’s the official story of how this chic bag was born —
“In 1981, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. She had just placed her straw bag in the overhead compartment of her seat, but the contents fell to the floor, leaving her to scramble to replace the contents. Birkin explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked. In 1984, he created a black supple leather bag for her: the Birkin bag,[
Why can’t I ever have a flight like that? Usually when I spill things on strangers sitting next to me I just get a dirty look, not a purse created in my name.
So here comes the interesting part. How am I separated by six degrees to Jane Birkin?
I. Desperately searching for style help, I bought “The Lucky Guide to Mastering any Style”.
2. During my Bohemian month, the “Lucky Guide” sites Jane Birkin as a famous Bohemian style icon. Who is Jane Birkin? Never heard of her. My husband tells me she was married to Serge Gainsbourg. Uh, who?
3. I listen to some of Serge Gainsbourg’s music. There’s one song he sings with his daughter, Charlotte, that I like very much. So who is this Charlotte?
4. It turns out that actress/singer Charlotte Gainsbourg is in another chapter of “The Lucky Guide to Mastering any style”. The editors of Lucky Magazine call Charlotte, “The best dressed girl in Paris.” And what style is Charlotte?
6. I am a Gamine! Which means I am so close to Jane Birkin right now I could steal her Birkin Bag.
Which I won’t. Because as Charlotte and I both know, Gamines don’t steal.
