Welcome to Florida!

Welcome to Florida!

Right now, I’m on vacation.  I’ve taken my kids to visit the grandparents in Florida.  No, my parents didn’t move there out of peer pressure because they’re old.  They’re actually from Florida.  In fact, I’m from Florida.  I was born and raised in Miami – a fact that seems strange to most people because I am neither cool, cutting edge, party-crazy or Latin.  I am white and quiet and yet I am from Miami.  How did this happen? Needless to…

The song from Frozen I wish my kids didn’t listen to…

My kids listen to the Frozen soundtrack all the time… It’s in our car, it’s in our house — at this point it’s in our very souls.  I find myself singing it even without my kids around, which is sad, really, but I’ve definitely had worse kids songs trapped in my head.  (“Elmo raps the alphabet” probably tops that list.) And I love the whole Frozen phenomenon.  I really do.  I’m so glad there’s a successful kid’s movie out there…

Why I love the library…

Why I love the library…

My kids and I go to the library at least once a week.  I love the fact that free books for everyone still exists in America.  It’s such a beautiful idea brought to you by none other than Benjamin Franklin in the 1700s.  Here’s a quote from Ben — “These Libraries have improved the general Conversation of Americans, made the common Tradesman and Farmers as intelligent as most Gentlemen from other Countries, and perhaps have contributed in some Degree to…

The ONLY Christmas toy my kids are still playing with…

When our oldest son was a baby, my husband’s Aunt Betty came for a visit.  She looked around at all the super-high tech toys that littered our house and said, “Pots and pans.  All kids really need are pots and pans.” I completely scoffed.  I thought, Well, maybe when your kids were young they liked pots and pans, but that’s because there were only pots and pans to play with.  Since then there have been a lot of advances in…

Holiday traditions and some really cute chickens…

A Year in Review – Day 5 Congrats!  Cheri!  You are the winner of this Bombshell dress! I hope you wear it this year while watching Elf and delivering cookies and going to the beach on the solstice.  I really loved reading about everyone’s favorite holiday traditions (Is that you Snow Goat?) and I’m definitely going to incorporate some of them into our holiday this year.  I think the more magical and mystical the holidays can be and the less…

My version of a Thanksgiving story…

My version of a Thanksgiving story…

Bombshell – Day 27 Ever since we moved to the country seven years ago, we’ve had chickens.  And when I say “ever since”, I really mean it.  No sooner had our moving truck pulled into our first country rental house when I noticed chickens running around our new property. Apparently, the previous tenants had moved out and decided to just leave all their chickens without informing anyone of this decision.  Thus, our “city folks” chicken education began.  Now, seven years…

An organic outfit for the pumpkin patch…

Eco Mama – Day 23 I was so, so, so very happy today that I chose Eco Mama for October.  I’m a firm believer in going to as many pumpkin patches as possible around Halloween and I just can’t imagine picking out a pumpkin in Bombshell or taking a hay ride in Arty Slick.  These events call for jeans and a t-shirt and if they happen to be organic, then all the better. I was even grateful for my Tom…

How to make a trampoline even more dangerous for children…

Just add goats!!!     Garfield and Odie, our new goats, were not placed on our trampoline — they saw fun happening on the trampoline and decided to get on all by themselves!!!  I was shocked.  I was amazed.  And I couldn’t help wondering, what other animals (preferably horned) can I get for our trampoline?  Let the bizarre circus experiments begin!
